Today I am presenting a paper from an old friend of mine. Well, “friend” is perhaps a slight exaggeration, as I have only met him a few times, but his work has nevertheless been a great inspiration to me over the years, since we work in the same field: transport network vulnerability. In 2006 Erik Jenelius from KTH in Stockholm, Sweden, together with Tom Petersen and Lars Göran Mattson published Importance and exposure in road network vulnerability analysis, where they introduce the concepts of link importance and site exposure. In the paper they calculate several indices for link importance and site exposure for the Swedish road network, based on the increase in generalized travel cost when links are closed.

How are companies located in sparse transport networks affected by supply chain disruptions? This article develops a new framework for the categorization of supply chains, and introduces the notion of the constrained supply chain. Within the constrained supply chain framework, a company can address its locational disadvantage by either redesigning the supply chain towards a better structure, in order to gain better location, or by redesigning the supply chain towards a better organization, in order to gain better preparedness.
Are you presenting at the TRB 2009, the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting? Personally I consider presenting an article at TRB as only inches away from having an article published in an academic journal. The reason is that you have to submit a full paper, not just an abstract, which is then fully peer reviewed by at least three referees, thus ensuring the quality of the paper. A reliable transportation network represents a net benefit to society, and conversely, a vulnerable network represents a net cost to society. Hence, vulnerability ought to be an important parameter for decision-support in cost-benefit analyses, in order to establish a link between the terms reliability and vulnerability vis-à-vis costs and benefits. A multi-criteria analysis approach is suggested as an appropriate methodology for analyzing the monetary and non-monetary effects of vulnerability. Looking beyond the science of vulnerability assessments, this paper discusses some of the network attributes that influence the vulnerability of transportation networks, influences that can be described as structure-related, nature-related or traffic-related attributes. The influences of the individual attributes are then examined as possible candidates for measuring of the vulnerability of the transportation network.
