Building the resilient supply chain

Supply chain risk seems to be on everyone’s agenda these days, with one event after the other competing for spotlight attention. The Building a Resilient Supply Chain Summit, in New Orleans, 9-10 December 2010, is up next. This event, so the conference website says, is the must-attend event for senior supply chain executives looking to evolve their supply strategies to better respond to ever changing risks, market conditions and global compliance requirements. Well said, but that is not the reason why yours truly is promoting the event. My reason for blogging about it is the simple fact that they have an impressive list of  related resources on the conference website: reports, articles, blogs (!), interviews and videos. Even if you’re not planning to attend the conference, then at least you should attend their website, which is full of valuable insights, some of which I will highlight in this post.

Why me?

It’s funny how things come to you sometimes. This morning I was going over my visitor stats, when I noticed a new referring link I had not seen before. Upon investigating, I found out that I was listed as a resource in the “blogs” category for this conference. I feel honored to be listed alongside Martin Christopher and Yossi Sheffi,  but I’m not sure I deserve it, and I have to admit that this spotlight attention was a bit unexpected. While this post is a reciprocal gesture, it is also a post  pointing to resources for my readers. In fact, some of the papers and reports I found on the website were new to me, despite three years of daily literature searches for new research material.

High profile

Unlike the Supply Chain Risk Management Forum perhaps, there can be little doubt that is a high-profile event, with CEOs and Directors  from leading global companies as speakers and top level executives as the targeted audience. “These top execs do not leave the office for just any event” says the advertising, and if that is true it is a sound testimony to the outreach and value this event has among the professionals in the industry.

Agenda

The agenda for the resilient supply chain summit looks impressive, with topics such as:

Innovation through Disaster: Crucial Lessons Learned from Major Supply Chain Disruptions

How MeadWestvaco coped with a major supply chain disruption as a result of the Swine Flu scare and how that lead to a global business continuity plan for pandemics and a change in planning strategies.

The Wal-Mart and Starbucks Guide to Asset Protection and Security Within the Supply Chain

The key “lessons learned” from supply chain leaders Wal-Mart and Starbucks on the asset protection strategies that give them a crucial advantage within their operational and logistics processes.

Improve Flexibility by Diversifying Your Transportation Networks and Collaborating with Logistics Service Providers

How to control costs and service levels in normal times and flexibility in times of high demand or disaster recovery by developing an ongoing basis for alternative relationships with logistics networks.

The Resilient Supply Chain Mapping Workshop

Learn how to pinpoint the key risks within your supply chain, analyze the effectiveness of your current risk management practices and ensure future flexibility with a step-by-step methodology.

You can read the whole resilient supply chain summit agenda here.

Resources

What impresses me most though, is the list of selected resources in supply chain resilience. This is the first time I have seen a conference website that promotes more than just the conference, and that actually uses its webspace to deliver well-researched background information, where you among other things will find

Reports

Articles

  • Building the resilient supply chain by Yossi Sheffi
  • How to Prepare for Global Supply Chain Disruptions by Nathan Pieri

Blogs

Interviews

Videos

  • Supply Chain Risk Reduction – an interview with Professor Richard Wilding from Cranfield University, which I will include in my lecture on supply chain risk this year (I left it out last year).
